The Passion of Punk Revealed: Thrice - Illusion of Safety

For those who observe the lack of creativity and actual musical talent and genius in music today, there is hope. In a word: Thrice. Thrice charged the California rock scene first back in 1998. Several months later the released their first EP, First Impressions. A CD filled with alternating styles and genres. Paul Minor, their ever occupied producer, helped them later release their debut album, Identity Crisis. This album was the real breakthrough the for Thrice. The ever so talented musicians came together in a harmonious journey, through a torrid oblivion of harcore punk, pop punk, and melodious metal. Songs such as To What End and Phoenix Ignition may strike even the sternest hardcore rocker in search of absolute talent as ingenuis. When Thrice released their third album, Illusion Of Safety, thrice they amazed. When one listens to this CD, they sense the application of classical genius again, as Beethoven is renowned in modern rock. Heavy, but never sloppy, songs like A Subtle Danger and Where Idols Once Stood bring out the rage of a hornet and the grace of a gazell, at the same time. Thrice brings out their mellow yet intense side in songs like Trust and So Strange I Remember You. Compared to their last album, Illusion of Safety is, for the most part, heavier and more professional. It is obvious that their sound quality increased with their budget. Although Illusion of Safety doesnt contain as many melodious and classical elements as Identity Crisis does, it doesnt fail to follow up to, and even sometimes surpass their previous works. The only way to truly appreciate the talent and efforts of a band that isnt in the scene to go mainstream and sell out, is to hear them for yourselves. I will certainly enjoyed them in the pit April 23rd at Bogarts in Cincinnati.
